Donald Trump: Bad for Working Families

Today, Donald Trump officially became the President of the United States — and that’s bad news for working families. From Trump’s personal hobby of exploiting workers to the extremist cabinet he’s appointed, our work over the next four years is cut out for us. Here’s what we’re up against.

In his forty-six years as a businessman, Donald Trump came under fire countless times for refusing to pay his employees. To make matters worse, Trump hasn’t shown any remorse for the hundreds of workers he stiffed — in fact, he bragged about it during a debate. And despite Donald Trump’s radical anti-immigrant rhetoric, he’s sold out American workers throughout his career, often taking advantage of marginalized and undocumented workers.

While you might think that Donald Trump’s personal dealings may not carry over into his presidency, his recent behavior shows that he plans to take his anti-worker crusade nationwide. In one of his first acts as President-elect, he shut Carrier’s workers union out of negotiations, leaving hundreds of employees out in the cold. Rather than stepping up to address the fallout from his bungled “deal,” Trump chose instead to attack the union’s president.

If that isn’t scary enough, Trump won’t be alone in attacking workers. He’s building an army of anti-worker extremists to help him dismantle the rights that generations of workers have fought to protect. Just take a look at his pick for Labor Secretary, Andrew Puzder.

When workers stand strong and stand together, we win.

While the Department of Labor is intended to defend workers’ rights, improve working conditions, and ensure fair pay for workers, Puzder (and Trump) aim to do the exact opposite. Like Trump, Puzder has a long history of poor treatment of workers: a survey found that two-thirds of women working at his restaurants had experienced sexual harassment at work, and one-third of his workers reported wage theft or denial of required breaks. And those figures aren’t just accidents: Puzder has publicly espoused his disdain for worker protections.

Puzder isn’t the only reason for concern. With an anti-worker Congress on his side, Donald Trump is poised to appoint a new Supreme Court justice — and with Trump’s Supreme Court shortlist filled with right-wing stalwarts, that could be bad news for workers. While Friedrichs vs. California Teachers Association may be dead in the water, anti-worker billionaires aren’t giving up their bid to crush workers’ ability to organize.

No matter how you slice it, the next four years look grim for workers across the country — but that doesn’t mean the fight is over. When workers stand strong and stand together, we win. Here in Oregon, workers came together and raised the wage, enacted mandatory paid sick leave, and expanded overtime pay. Now it’s up to us to keep the momentum going and show the nation that workers will never stop fighting for what’s right.
